Incident at Holborn

Updated Saturday 4 April 2015 00:06 hrs

The Fire has been extinguished and we are now working with emergency responders and contractors so that businesses can be reopened and residents can return home in phases.

There will be a decision made between the Police, the Fire Brigade and Camden Council before letting any residents return to their properties. Premises will undergo a risk assessment to check for any dangers. Once this is complete and properties are secured residents can begin to return.

Electricity will restored to all affected properties overnight and the gas supply is now back on to most premises in Camden.

Phase 1

East side of Kingsway (Holborn to Aldwych) and West side of Kingsway (Holborn to Great Queen Street)

Police are currently contacting owners to get them to escort the fire brigade into their basements to check for carbon monoxide; and then secure the premises.

If you are an affected business please call Camden on 020 7974 4444 with your keyholder contact details which we will forward onto the Police to assist with the above.

Until that process is complete, there will be restrictions on pedestrians being allowed access until such time as the properties are secured.

Phase 2

West side of Kingsway (Great Queen Street running south past Keeley Street) These properties will be contacted by the Police once they are ready to proceed.

Phase 3

Kingsway south running carriage way (the east side) the tunnel will be inspected today and if it is assessed to be safe this part of Kingsway should be open to traffic later today.

Phase 4

Kingsway north running carriage way (the west side) has substantial damage and may not be available for many days.

Other reported roads closures for pedestrians and vehicles are as follows:

Southampton Row by Holborn station

Kingsway from The Aldwych to High Holborn

Parker Street from Kingsway to Newton Street

Great Queen St from Kingsway to Newton Street
