20mph Area
Proposed 20mph speed limit & improvements

CAMDEN are seeking your views on the Council's proposal to change the speed limit in our area from 30mph to 20mph. This would apply to all streets between Euston Road, Woburn Place / Southampton Row, Theobalds Road and Grays Inn Road, highlighted on the map.

A large number of roads in the area have already received traffic calming measures, and average traffic speeds on all roads are below 25mph. This allows us to propose a low cost solution using predominantly signs and line markings, except in key areas where higher accident rates have been recorded or where additional pedestrian / cycling benefits can be achieved.

These key areas have been identified as:
• Millman Street, proposed speed table with wider footways outside St George the Martyr
Primary School CE to slow speeds and aid pedestrians crossing the road at this location. This
would require 4 Resident parking spaces to be relocated to the opposite side of the street, but
no parking spaces will be lost.
• Rugby Street, proposed relocation of 1 resident parking bay to Millman Street to allow the
installation of an on-street cycle facility close to Lambs Conduit Street.
• Cartwright Gardens / Leigh Street, proposed junction speed table to slow speeds and aid
pedestrians crossing the road at this location.

The remainder of the roads in the area will have 20mph road markings painted on the street. All the roads within the highlighted area will have their speed limits reduced to 20mph. No resident parking spaces will be lost as a result of the scheme.

Lower speed limits offer significant benefits to walking and cycling and also provide a more pleasant street environment. Additionally a large proportion of Camden's success in reducing road casualties can also be attributed to the introduction of 20mph limits within the borough.

If agreed, the 20mph speed limit, with associated signs and lining, and the additional measures proposed on Millman Street and Cartwright Gardens / Leigh Street will be implimented during 2012.

Funding has been secured from Transport for London.

The Council would be pleased to hear your views on the proposed measures.
