Theatre company "Schizothemia" will be performing their new, tri-lingual play Bás - Shallow Death in "The Crypt" in Holborn.
A Welsh minister (Geraint) and an Irish guard (Pádraig) become become trapped in a WW1 dug-out in France after a German night raid. They must find a common language in order to communicate and to survive. They manage to construct a hybrid form of Irish and Welsh, but quickly realise their plight is greater than they had envisaged
The play is performed in Welsh, English and Irish.
A little about the process
We see the soldiers of WW1 (and wars in general) not as heroes, but as victims. This is something we wanted to portray from the outset, so instantly we jumped to 1917 (although the play never outright mentions this.) and the men in this play are of a younger metal. Three of the characters are between 16-24, and the other two are in their late 20’s or early 30’s. Their naivety on the idea of glorified death, and it’s juxtaposition with the older men’s knowledge, was the impetus for the beginnings of the plot. With that main theme in mind we did a treatment, wrote the script, and took it through several drafts.
